Expanding Institutional Access (EIA) Awards for the 2024 Maize Genetics Meeting

EIA award submissions are now closed.

The EIA award will provide support to attend the Maize Genetics Meeting. We will accept EIA applications from October 18th, 2023 to November 22nd, 2023.

Purpose: This program seeks to recruit and retain scientists from diverse institutions including community colleges, primarily undergraduate and masters granting institutions*. The program provides an opportunity for awardees to learn about maize genetics through connecting with scientists in the maize genetics community, explore potential collaborations, and develop career contacts. Awards will cover the cost of registration for the conference. During the conference, awardees will be welcomed by the maize community, and will have opportunities to interact with peers, invited speakers, and program officers from public funding agencies.

EIA applicants should 1) fill out the application form, and 2) student applicants must provide the name and email address of at least one referee, who must be a research mentor, collaborator, or faculty supervisor. Faculty applicants are not required to provide a referee. Eligible applicants include: undergraduate students; graduate students and faculty from non-R1 institutions*. Applicants must be either citizens or permanent residents of the USA; or employed at a U.S. institution. Undergraduate students and first-time conference attendees are encouraged to apply.

* Based on Carnegie Classification. Students and faculty from Associates (Community) Colleges, Baccalaureate Colleges (PUIs), M1, M2, M3, and R2 institutions are eligible to apply.

Deadline: For full consideration, EIA applications should be submitted by November 22nd, 2023.

Previous maize genetics research experience is not required to apply for a EIA award but some plant biology or genetics-related research experience will make a stronger application. Submitting an abstract to present a research poster or talk is recommended, even if it is not directly relevant to maize genetics. Abstract submission will be open until January 3, 2024. Details can be found on the Abstract/Program page. Applicants that do not have a final title for their abstract when submitting the EIA application should submit a provisional title.

For direct questions regarding the award please contact Beth Thompson, [email protected]. For technical questions about submitting applications please contact John Portwood, [email protected].

EIA applicants should fill out the attached form, submit a CV or résumé, and student applicants must provide the name and email address of at least one referee, who must be a research mentor, collaborator. or faculty supervisor.

All awardees, including students and faculty mentors, will be required to complete short questionnaires before and after the meeting, and to write a Summary Statement regarding their meeting experience after the close of the conference. Reimbursement checks will be processed and issued upon receipt of the required documentation.
